    Iraq recovers missing air force

Mon, 08/31/2009 - 12:50pm  Provided by: (FP Passport)

One of the stranger stories of the weekend was Iraq's announcement that it was negotiating the return of 19 Mig fighter jets that had been sent to Serbia for maintenance in the late 1980s and never returned:

Sanctions slapped on Iraq because of Saddam's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 would have made it impossible to bring the MiG-21 and MiG-23 jet fighters back while he was in power.

Two of the jets were ready for "immediate use", the statement said, and a preliminary agreement had been reached with the Serbian government to repair the others and send them back.

The statement did not say when the existence of the fighters had come to light

During his visit to Iraq earlier this month, Serbia's Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac told Iraqi officials about the existence of the jets, said a senior Serbian Defense official who did not want to be quoted by name.

"None are in flyable condition, they are dismantled and in crates. Only one MiG 23 that was displayed in (Belgrade's) air force museum is whole," he said.

This is welcome news for Iraq, which has been looking to build up its air defences, but something seems very off about this. Slobodan Milosevic has been out of power since 2000 and Saddam Hussein since 2003, yet only now has anyone mentioned these planes?

I'm no expert, but given that (according to Wikipedia, at least) Serbia only has about 40 MiGs of its own, it seems like the 19 they were keeping in storage would be kind of hard to miss.

Also, since when was Milosevic that concerned about violating international sanctions?

Russia deploys missiles along border with North Korea

Russia deploys missiles along border with North Korea

    Tony Halpin in Moscow

Russia has put defences on alert along its border with North Korea amid tensions over possible new missile tests by the secretive Communist regime.

The Kremlin ordered troops to deploy Russia’s most advanced missile defence system, the S-400, to intercept any threats from North Korea’s nuclear programme. General Nikolai Makarov, the head of the Russian army, said that a mobile battery of 32 surface-to-air missiles had been put into operation in anticipation of any Korean tests.

“We are taking these preventative measures as a security guarantee against faulty launches of the missiles and to guarantee that fragments of these missiles never fall on Russian territory,” he said. “We are concerned by the fact that the site in North Korea where it carries out its nuclear tests is located quite close to the Russian border.”

A senior Russian senator said that use of the S-400 system could not be ruled out, but he rejected any comparison between Moscow’s actions and the decision by the United States to build a missile defence shield in Eastern Europe. The US argues that the shield is necessary to deter attacks by rogue nations such as Iran and North Korea, but Russia has denounced the plan as a threat to its national security.

Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Federation Council’s International Affairs Committee, said that the US was responding to “non-existent” dangers, while Russia was defending against “the emergence of real sources of threat”.

Russia’s Far Eastern city of Vladivostok is just 93 miles from its narrow border with North Korea. Six missiles test-fired by North Korea in 2006 reportedly fell in Russian waters in the Sea of Japan.

North Korea fired 11 short-range rockets with a range of up to 500km in two separate launches last month, defying a United Nations ban on ballistic missile activities linked to sanctions against its nuclear programme.

The regime in Pyongyang carried out a second underground nuclear explosion in May at the same time as it test-fired another series of short-range missiles. It also test-fired a long-range missile in April that is said to be capable of reaching Britain and the US.

Russia is a member of the six-party group, along with the US, China, Japan, North and South Korea, that is attempting to convince Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear ambitions. The S-400 “Triumph” system has a range of up to 400km and is said to be capable of bringing down cruise and tactical missiles as well as aircraft using stealth technology.

The defence system was put in place as a Russian presidential envoy travelled to South Korea for talks yesterday with President Lee Myung-Bak. A Kremlin spokesman said that they discussed “issues relating to trilateral co-operation between Russia, South Korea, and North Korea”.

    Iran Update August 31st, 2009

    Iran Update

    • The regime has sacked the chief prosecutor, Saed Mortazavi, and replaced him with someone with less of a brutal reputation. The regime appears to be fearful of its population and is trying to appear to be reforming.
    • Karroubi has written a letter saying he is willing to provide evidence of the rape of prisoners at Kahrizak prison.
    • Michael Ledeen has a must-read piece on Pajamas Media. Ayatollah Khamenei is admitting that members of the security forces made mistakes, specifically the attacks on university dorms, and should be prosecuted. He’s trying to distance himself from the people’s anger. The head of the IRGC also admitted that “criminal” raids had occurred at Tehran University, and that an investigation had begun. He attributed it to people acting on their own, and not on the orders of the leadership, of course.
    • Ledeen also mentions that there has been a huge explosion at the region’s second largest petrochemical facility, located at Bandar Assaluyeh in Iran, which destroyed about one-third of the plant. He attributes this act to elements opposed to the regime. The shutting down of the plant is causing huge problems, as more of the government-run vehicles will have to run on gasoline, which Iran has to import large quantities of.
    • He also links to this BBC report that includes testimony of frozen bodies being delivered to graves at night with clear signs of sexual and physical abuse.

The Iran Countdown, 'hub' for organized violence

    The Iran Countdown

August 30, 4:20 AMSan Jose Republican ExaminerAnnie Hamilton

It's not as though we haven't been WARNED repeatedly.

In the eight short years since September 11th, we've watched, analyzed and worried about Iran and the possibility that they would gain access to nuclear weapons, and for good reason. There is ample evidence that this Regime has aggressively pursued the development and acquisition of nuclear technology since the early '80's. In his book, "The Iran Threat" Alireza Jafarzadeh describes how Alireza Assar, a Physicist who trained in Scotland and Italy was approached in 1985 by Commanders from the IRGC who recruited him to begin work on such a program through their Ministry of Defense. Over the years, several discussions were reportedly held, including the revelation that they'd managed to collect $800 million dollars to complete the project, $700 million more than deemed necessary. The IRGC has experienced turmoil over the years, between Leadership changes, information leaking out and incarceration for those who refused to continue to cooperate within the parameters of the program.

While the development of nuclear technology is a situation that always calls for concern and tremendous consideration, Iran's situation is highly unique as they seem to offer a networking 'hub' for organized violence, holding court as the Chief sponsor of Islamic terror. In addition, they openly and quite happily harbor al Qaeda as well as other operatives  and at a minimum, indirectly support al Qaeda's ongoing battle for Iraq. To add to our growing list of concerns, one must consider Iran's President Ahmadinejad, former Revolutionary guard, who reportedly helped 'take over' the U.S. embassy in Iran in 1979. A radical islamist, his open hatred of the US and Israel is well known and documented. During his speech, The World Without Zionism" he openly stated,  ... "To those who doubt, to those who ask is it possible, or those who do not believe, I say accomplishment of a world without America and Israel is both possible and feasible.”

Military sources have now confirmed  that Russia has been supplying Iran with the S-300 air defense system, several agreements having already been signed between Ahmadinejad and at least one former Soviet Republic. Although Israel's F-16 multi-role fighter is equipped with systems that can detect and alert pilots of potential launches, it's unclear how many of their craft possess this critical ability. Adding to this turn of events was the announcement that Syria is also expected to receive access and capability for the S-300.

I find it increasingly disturbing that our Administration, currently staffed with spineless apologists and brain-dead lefties, (including Obama, Napolitano, Clinton and introducing  former Los Angeles times columnist and anti-Israel Rosa Brooks, new advisor to the Undersecretary of Defense) refuse to understand or acknowledge the ever present danger facing our Nation as a result of ignoring the constant rantings of Ahmadinejad who behaves like a mentally incompetent mini-Hitler with a Napoleon complex. Despite the continual warnings, rising tension, elections that successfully launched Iran into a full-blown state of chaos, how did Gates react? he cuts our military budget, yet again.  Are these goobers waiting for Ahmadinejad to publish his intent to 'rid the world of the Great Satan and mini-Satan' respectively, in a full page spread in the New York Times?  Rather than deal with reality, our inexperienced excuse for a leadership has announced that we are 'not in conflict with Islam' and that we need to find new ways to work together and to embrace Muslims. How? by sharpening their swords for them? Has the White House gone completely nuts? Perhaps they're waiting for 'The Monkey' (as Ahmadinejad is called throughout Iran) to make the first 'serious' move in order to prove their intent? Well, how's this for intent: Iran is expected to have their previously rumored, yet now confirmed nuclear program at 100 % capacity by next year.

And what was the official reaction? by setting an end of September 'deadline' for the beginning of talks. Now, although a failure to meet that deadline could mean economic sanctions on Iran, (by unblocking the current bill in Congress) including cutting off their supply of refined gasoline, not to mention permitting Israel to strike against their nuclear program without fear of opposition by our Administration,  I'm guessing that Ahmadinejad is about as frightened of Obama's hollow threats as Muammar Gaddafi was when Obama forewarned them that 'they had better not celebrate' al-Megrahi's release by Scottish incompetent Secretary MacAskill back to Libya. And we have all seen how that turned out...Obama standing there, shaking his head with 'disappointment' while al-Megrahsi and friends party it up in Libya. Gordon Brown, only validated Hannan's earlier statements accusing him of lacking any semblance of testicular fortitude by remaining silent on the issue although Former Minister Tom Harris pointed out that there is nothing in the Scotland Act to prevent a Prime Minister from commenting on a decision by the Edinburgh government.

It's critical to understand and consider Iran's impressive influence throughout the World. These are educated people, much different than other terrorists that largely live in tribal settings. In Vallely/McInerney's recent book, "Endgame" it's described how in recent years, Iran has begun forging alliances with Cuba and Venezuela, a relationship that makes little economic (or political) sense as they hardly share ideologies yet they do share a pathological hatred of North Americans. As such, Chavez has only been too happy to provide a training ground for al Qaeda.  There is speculation that our Administration's decision  to send an Ambassador into Syria was decided with the hopes of restoring this deeply troubled relationship, (severly damaged since Damascaus was blamed in the 2005 murder of Lebanon Prime Minister Rafik Hariri  in a bomb explosion in Beirut ) with the intent to distance and discourage Syria from continuing their dangerous ties with Hamas, Hezbollah and especially, Iran.

Strange as it may sound, President Ahmadinejad swears that a  halo of light appeared around him while he addressed the UN in '05, confirming his "divine purpose on Earth " Ahmadinejad’s is also obsessed with the return of Shiite Muslims’ messiah and as a stringent follower of Islam, has expressed his ultimate goal of the destruction of America and Israel on more than one occasion. Iran’s “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Ali Khameini declared that Iran refuses to “beg world powers for its right to develop nuclear technology” and has demonstrated that it will not retreat from the "field of danger" and will protect those rights, even should it mean death for them. Ahmadinejad  reportedly spoke with Syrian president Bashar Assad recently, where (if sources are citing truthful statements) Assad is reportedly hoping for a united war as it will only strengthen their 'position.'

Deadline or not, this hardly portrays a positive outlook for our safety in America, our Administration or for hope for peace in the middle east. The $800 million dollar question remains: How will our Administration react to this deadly threat against Israel and America?

Since when does Immigration Reform mean Open Borders and Amnesty?

Since when does Immigration Reform mean Open Borders and Amnesty?

August 31, 7:37 AMSan Diego Immigration Policy ExaminerCarl Braun

Our immigration system and our country is under duress

Most of us on the right and left side of this debate will acknowledge there is a desperate need for “immigration reform” but what does that mean? Well for some it means open borders and amnesty while for others it is quite the opposite. The differences are complicated and the sides are diametrically opposed to each other on many of the points. One wants the system fixed and demands that anyone who came here illegally be dealt with through the legal system. The other side wants the system fixed and demands that everyone who came here illegally get a “gimme” on the crime or crimes they have committed and get a path to citizenship. They want an immigration system that is liberal and one that provides anyone with the ability or desire to come here, the “right” to do it. We are not likely to find common ground on this. Amnesty is unacceptable for the right and a core principal for the left.

Illegal immigration aside, what about the system everyone agrees should be fixed? Certainly it is broken. How could it not be? Since the 1960’s Ted Kennedy and his ilk (please forgive me for not shedding tears on his passing) have turned replacement level immigration into a free-for-all. We have allowed more people to immigrate to the United States/America in the last forty years than in the last four hundred years combined. It has transformed our culture, the environment, our education system, our economy…virtually no aspect of American life has not been impacted by those on the express train to America.

You’ve heard it said time and time again. We are a nation of immigrants, blah, blah, blah. Yes we are and I wouldn’t be here were it not for a couple of German and Irish immigrants with a desire to come to America. They emigrated here about 100 years ago, legally through Ellis Island and staked their claim to the American Dream. They went through incredible hardships to get here and continued to work hard to become Americans. Amongst each other they spoke their native tongue but refused to let the kids speak anything but English; probably so they could keep a few secrets. They had customs that they passed down and new ones they made up. It is the same story told millions of times across this country.

Immigration can be a good thing but only as long as it is controlled, the immigrants can make a contribution to their new country and they do it legally. My grandfather was a printer. A skilled tradesman. At a time when we needed both. The reason for controls is key to the whole reason for immigration in the first place. We as a society must know who are here, if they have received proper health screenings and are they going to make a “needed contribution” to our society. This part of the equation is often overlooked. We must have a NEED. People do not have a RIGHT to come to America no more than I have a RIGHT to emigrate to Mexico or the Sudan. Historically it is a PRIVELEGE granted by those who are citizens and/or already legally here and it should be based on what skills are needed in the US at the time and what level of contribution will be made by those brought in to fill those needs. What is so hard to understand about that? Ah, maybe it is that whole logic and reason thing again. I always get caught up in that line of thinking.

Illegal Immigrants come here because they simply want to and they cannot or will not do it the LEGAL way. It really is very simple. Millions get in line to do it properly every year. Illegal immigrants have NO RIGHT to be here. Granted, the system is messed up (thanks again Teddy) but violating it is really no different than saying you don’t like the price of the food in the grocery store so you’re just going to walk out the door with the product without paying for it.

Now we can fix the system and we should, but the illegal immigrants should not have say in it nor should they be allowed a “Get Out Of Guatemala Free” card. Immigration should be tied to the needs of the country and NOT the immigrants. This is where we part ways with the left. Right now our country does not NEED immigrants. We need jobs for those already here. When that changes, then let those in that can make a contribution to our economy and our society, not be a drain on it.

I think we need to put a 2-5 year hold on ALL immigration. (Oh my. Did he really say that?) While we are at it, fix the system, deport those that are criminals and give everyone else that are not supposed to be here a choice, leave or prove WHY you should stay? What are you contributing to our society? Did you commit any other crimes in America, other than crossing the border illegally? If not, let’s take a closer look but no guarantees. We’ll have plenty of bureaucrats to handle the interviews. They won’t be processing new immigration applications for a while anyway. Come up with a set of rules based on need and rigidly follow them. Allow for an appeals process. If you don’t fit… adios, see ya, au revoir, auf wiedersehen, have a nice life…in your country.

Yes, our government was complicit in allowing illegal immigration to occur for decades. We permitted our government to get away with it and for that WE bear some of the responsibility. No, it is not possible in my opinion to deport all twenty million plus illegal aliens nor should we. Many have been here for decades, made a solid contribution to our country and are otherwise law-abiding residents. If the tables were turned and Mexico gave Americans a green light to come aboard for all the benefits and opportunity you can bet your bottom dollar some Americans would have done it even though it may have been illegal. Doesn’t make it right but it would have happened nonetheless. We should however deport every criminal we get our hands on and properly secure the border so they cannot get back in. This is critical.

Let’s fix the system once and for all and give everyone who wants to be a citizen the same amount of respect they showed the citizens of this country, not the other way around. Lets be sure we have enough work for Americans before we let another 1.5 million in next year. That’s my immigration reform. If you have a “common sense” reason for allowing anyone in that wants to come, I’d like too hear it. If not, get on the immigration reform train, shed that amnesty baggage and lets fix our country, and it’s immigration system, together.

    Inhofe slams health reform

    By Ellis Goodwin

At a town hall meeting Wednesday Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) told Chickasha residents he does not need to read the 1,000 page health care reform bill, he will simply vote against it.

"I don't have to read it, or know what's in it. I'm going to oppose it anyways," he said.

Inhofe said public opinion and information provided by news media have helped him become a staunch non-supporter of the bill. He said he would prefer waiting until after mid-term elections in 2010 to enact reforms. He did not say nothing should be done. He simply feels that a topic as important as healthcare should not be rushed through the Senate or House of Representatives.

City Council Member Hank Ross agreed with Inhofe. Ross owns a medical care company in Chickasha. He said he does not believe the government would be efficient in providing care and would like to see reforms happen at a slower pace.

"I personally think Obama has over reached," Ross said. "I think we need to treat this with kid gloves and do it right."

Inhofe also spoke about the diminishing military budget and the closing of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, but healthcare was the hot button subject.

Inhofe took the opportunity to blame Democrats for a bevy of issues. He lashed out at democrats for overtaking the government and spending billions of dollars on unpopular packages. He said government is becoming too big and overreaching its boundaries.

"People are not buying these concepts that are completely foreign to America," Inhofe said. "We're almost reaching a revolution in this country."

Many in the meeting agreed and were vocal about their disdain for the current climate in Washington.

"No more compromise," Chickasha resident Ed Hicks said. "We're losing our country."

Inhofe's town hall meeting was much like others happening during the Senate's recess. Except there was no dissent, just concerns about change and what is happening in Washington. Health care reform was the main topic of discussion, but some voiced their worries that the Cap and Trade bill would hurt local oil producers. Others were worried about their Second Amendment right and their ability to own and carry firearms.

Inhofe tried to squelch the concerns, but until Republicans take control of at least one branch of the government it will be an uphill battle. He said he will do anything he can to keep fighting and promote the wants and needs of his constituents when he returns to Washington next month.

Apollo 11 "Moon Rock" in Amsterdam museum "fake"

'Moon rock' given to Holland by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin is fake

A moon rock given to the Dutch prime minister by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969 has turned out to be a fake.

Curators at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, where the rock has attracted tens of thousands of visitors each year, discovered that the "lunar rock", valued at £308,000, was in fact petrified wood.

Xandra van Gelder, who oversaw the investigation, said the museum would continue to keep the stone as a curiosity.

"It's a good story, with some questions that are still unanswered," she said. "We can laugh about it."

The rock was given to Willem Drees, a former Dutch leader, during a global tour by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin following their moon mission 50 years ago.

    J. William Middendorf, the former American ambassador to the Netherlands, made the presentation to Mr Drees and the rock was then donated to the Rijksmuseum after his death in 1988.

"I do remember that Drees was very interested in the little piece of stone. But that it's not real, I don't know anything about that," Mr Middendorf said.

Nasa gave moon rocks to more than 100 countries following lunar missions in 1969 and the 1970s.

The United States Embassy in The Hague is carrying out an investigation into the affair.

Researchers Amsterdam's Free University were able to tell at a glance that the rock was unlikely to be from the moon, a conclusion that was borne out by tests.

"It's a nondescript, pretty-much-worthless stone," said Frank Beunk, a geologist involved in the investigation.

    "Emergency Control" of the Internet

    "Emergency Control" of the Internet

    by Tom Burghardt

You have to hand it to congressional Democrats. Mendacious grifters whose national security agenda is virtually indistinguishable from Bushist Republicans, when it comes to rearranging proverbial deck chairs on the Titanic, the party of "change" is second to none in the "all terrorism all the time" department.

While promising to restore the "rule of law," "protect civil liberties" while "keeping America safe," in practice, congressional Democrats like well-coiffed Republican clones across the aisle, are crafting legislation that would do Dick Cheney proud!

As the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (S.773) wends its way through Congress, civil liberties' advocates are decrying provisions that would hand the President unlimited power to disconnect private-sector computers from the internet.

CNET reported August 28, that the latest iteration of the bill "would allow the president to 'declare a cybersecurity emergency' relating to 'non-governmental' computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat."

Drafted by Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), "best friends forever" of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the telecommunications industry, they were key enablers of Bush-era warrantless wiretapping and privacy-killing data mining programs that continue apace under Obama.

    As The New York Times
revealed in June, a former NSA analyst described a secret database "code-named Pinwale, that archived foreign and domestic e-mail messages." The former analyst "described being trained in 2005 for a program in which the agency routinely examined large volumes of Americans' e-mail messages without court warrants. Two intelligence officials confirmed that the program was still in operation."

Antifascist Calling has noted on more than one occasion, that with "cyberterrorism" morphing into al-Qaeda 2.0, administration policies designed to increase the scope of national security state surveillance of private communications will soon eclipse the intrusiveness of Bushist programs.

As Cindy Cohn, the Legal Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) wrote earlier this month, commenting on this summer's public relations blitz by former NSA boss Michael Hayden and Office of Legal Counsel torture-enabler John Yoo's defense of the so-called Presidential Surveillance Program,

While the details are unknown, credible evidence indicates that billions of everyday communications of ordinary Americans are swept up by government computers and run through a process that includes both data-mining and review of content, to try to figure out whether any of us were involved in illegal or terrorist-related activity. That means that even the most personal and private of our electronic communications--between doctors and patients, between husbands and wives, or between children and parents--are subject to review by computer algorithms programmed by government bureaucrats or by the bureaucrats themselves. (Cindy Cohn, "Lawless Surveillance, Warrantless Rationales," American Constitution Society, August 17, 2009)

Both Rockefeller and Snowe are representative of the state's "bipartisan consensus" when it comes to increasing the power of the intelligence and security apparatus and were instrumental in ramming through retroactive immunity for telecoms who illegally spy on the American people. If last year's "debate" over the grotesque FISA Amendments Act (FAA) is an indication of how things will go after Congress' summer recess, despite hand-wringing by congressional "liberals," S.773 seems destined for passage. CNET revealed:

When Rockefeller, the chairman of the Senate Commerce committee, and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced the original bill in April, they claimed it was vital to protect national cybersecurity. "We must protect our critical infrastructure at all costs--from our water to our electricity, to banking, traffic lights and electronic health records," Rockefeller said. (Declan McCullagh, "Bill Would Give President Emergency Control of Internet," CNET News, August 28, 2009)

But as we witness practically on a daily basis, hysterical demands for "protection" from various "dark actors" inevitably invokes an aggressive response from militarized state security apparatchiks and their private partners.

As Antifascist Calling reported in July (see: "Behind the Cyberattacks on America and South Korea. 'Rogue' Hacker, Black Op or Both?"), when North Korea was accused of launching a widespread computer attack on U.S. government, South Korean and financial web sites, right-wing terrorism and security specialists perched at Stratfor and the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)--without a shred of evidence--linked the cyber blitz to a flurry of missile tests and the underground detonation of a nuclear device by North Korea.

Adding to the noise, Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee went so far as to urge President Obama to respond--by launching a cyberattack against the bankrupt Stalinist regime.

Despite provocative rhetoric and false charges that might have led to war with disastrous consequences for the people of East Asia, as it turned out an unknown sociopath used an updated version of the MyDoom e-mail worm to deploy a botnet in the attack. As Computerworld reported, the botnet "does not use typical antivirus evasion techniques and does not appear to have been written by a professional malware writer." Hardly a clarion call for bombing Dear Leader and countless thousands of Koreans to smithereens!

In this context, the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 goes much further than protecting "critical infrastructure" from over-hyped cyberattacks.

Among other measures, Section 18, "Cybersecurity Responsibilities and Authority," hands the Executive Branch, specifically The President, the power to "declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network." This does not simply apply to federal networks, but may very well extend to the private communications ("critical infrastructure information system or network") of citizens who might organize against some egregious act by the state, say a nuclear strike against a nation deemed responsible for launching a cyberattack against the United States, as suggested in May by the head of U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) General Kevin Chilton.

As I reported in June (see: "Cyber Command Launched. U.S. Strategic Command to Oversee Offensive Military Operations"), the military's newly-launched U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) is a "subordinate unified command" overseen by STRATCOM. Would "message force multipliers" embedded in the media or Pentagon public diplomacy specialists carrying out psychological operations (PSYOPS) here in the heimat, become the sole conduit for critical news and information during said "national emergency"?

Additionally, under Section 18's authority The President "shall designate an agency to be responsible for coordinating the response and restoration of any Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network affected by a cybersecurity emergency declaration under paragraph (2)." What agency might Senator Rockefeller have in mind for "coordinating the response"? As Antifascist Calling revealed in April (see: "Pentagon's Cyber Command to Be Based at NSA's Fort Meade"), CYBERCOM will be based at NSA headquarters and led by Lt. General Keith Alexander, the current NSA director who will oversee Pentagon efforts to coordinate both defensive and offensive cyber operations.

How might an out-of-control Executive Branch seize the initiative during an alleged "national emergency"? Paragraph 6 spells this out in no uncertain terms: "The President may order the disconnection of any Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information systems or networks in the interest of national security."

The draconian bill has drawn a sharp rebuke from both civil libertarians and the telecommunications industry. Larry Clinton, the president of the Internet Security Alliance (ISA) told CNET: "It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill."

And Wayne Crews, the director of technology studies at the rightist Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) told Federal Computer Week: "From American telecommunications to the power grid, virtually anything networked to some other computer is potentially fair game to [President Barack] Obama to exercise 'emergency powers'."

True enough as far as it goes, these "free market" cheerleaders are extremely solicitous however, when it comes to government defense and security contracts that benefit their clients; so long as the public is spared the burden of exercising effective control as cold cash greases the sweaty palm of the market's "invisible hand"!

As Antifascist Calling revealed in June (see: "Obama's Cybersecurity Plan: Bring on the Contractors!"), the ISA is no ordinary lobby shop. According to a self-promotional blurb on their web site, ISA "was created to provide a forum for information sharing" and "represents corporate security interests before legislators and regulators."

Amongst ISA sponsors one finds AIG (yes, that AIG!) Verizon, Raytheon, VeriSign, the National Association of Manufacturers, Nortel, Northrop Grumman, Tata, and Mellon. State partners include the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Congress, and the Department of Commerce.

Indeed ISA and CEI, are firm believers in the mantra that "the diversity of the internet places its security inescapably in the hands of the private sector," and that "regulation for consumer protection" that rely on "government mandates" to "address cyber infrastructure issues" will be "ineffective and counter-productive both from a national security and economic perspective." CEI and ISA's solution? Let's have another gulp of that tasty "market incentives" kool-aid!

In other words, hand over the cash in the form of taxpayer largess and we'll happily (and profitably!) continue to violate the rights of the American people by monitoring their Internet communications and surveilling their every move through nifty apps hardwired into wireless devices as the Electronic Frontier Foundation revealed in a new report on locational privacy.

Unfortunately, Clinton, Crews and their well-heeled partners seem to have forgotten an elementary lesson of history: a national security state such as ours will invariably unwind its tentacles into every corner of life unless challenged by a countervailing force--a pissed-off, mobilized citizenry.

Now that national security "change" chickens are coming home to roost, both CEI and ISA seem incredulous: you mean us? How's that for irony!

Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney with EFF told CNET that changes to the original version of the bill do not address pressing privacy concerns.

Tien told the publication: "The language has changed but it doesn't contain any real additional limits. It simply switches the more direct and obvious language they had originally to the more ambiguous (version)...The designation of what is a critical infrastructure system or network as far as I can tell has no specific process. There's no provision for any administrative process or review. That's where the problems seem to start. And then you have the amorphous powers that go along with it."

McCullagh avers: "Translation: If your company is deemed 'critical,' a new set of regulations kick in involving who you can hire, what information you must disclose, and when the government would exercise control over your computers or network."

And there you have it, a "cybersecurity" blacklist to accompany a potential state takeover of the Internet during a "national emergency." What will they think of next!

Town-hall clash! Arrest threat over Obama 'Joker' poster
Officer to protester: This ain't America no more

Editor's note: Earlier reports that Officer Wesley Cheeks Jr. is a police officer were in error. Further investigation has revealed Officer Cheeks is a member of the Fairfax County Public Schools' trained School Security Officer team. To contact the school's security force, e-mail Fred Ellis, the director of safety and security for Fairfax County Public Schools, or Jim McLain, the security coordinator.

A depiction of the sign banned by Officer Cheeks

"This used to be America," argued a protester outside a health-care town hall meeting in Reston, Va., after a security officer threatened him with arrest for holding up a sign with a picture critical of Barack Obama.

    The officer's response?

    "It ain't no more, OK?"

Get the prescription for reclaiming America's heritage of liberty – before the what the officer said is true – Joseph Farah's "Taking America Back," autographed only at the WND SuperStore.

A video of the town hall held earlier this week by Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., shows an unnamed protester standing on school grounds carrying a sign that read "Organizing for National Socialist Health Care – The Final Solution" and depicted Barack Obama in the Joker's makeup.

Officer Wesley Cheeks Jr. then told the protester that even though others were holding signs, his sign was unacceptable because of the depiction of Obama.

"But you got this with a picture," Cheeks said, explaining why the protester was being singled out from the others. "That's the difference. This has got a picture on it. That don't have a picture on it.

"Sir, leave the picture down," the officer said. "If you put the picture back up, you'll be charged with trespassing."

Video of the exchange can be seen below:

    (Story continues below)

The protester continued the argument, wondering how his presence among hundreds of others at the town hall meeting could be deemed trespassing.

The officer answered, "If I told you once to take it down and you put it back up, I can charge you with whatever I want to charge you with."

The argument continued until the officer walked away.

"This used to be America," said the protester.

"It ain't no more, OK?" answered Cheeks.

Officer Cheeks is a member of the Fairfax County Public Schools'  trained School Security Officer team. The school's security force, however, refused to comment on the story until its communications offices reopen on Monday.

As WND has reported, Americans have been flocking to lawmakers' health-care town hall meetings, typically voicing loud displeasure with the ever-expanding size of the federal government and what many see as yet another intrusive expansion.

All across the country, legislators coming to their home districts in attempt to sell the health-care plan to constituents are being met with fierce opposition and huge crowds:

The biggest source of protests are the health-care bill, the $787 billion economic stimulus package and the cap-and-trade legislation. They're also angry about Barack Obama's refusal to release his birth certificate to prove he is a "natural born citizen" and constitutionally eligible to serve in the White House.

According to an Associated Press report, Obama's top political adviser, David Axelrod, showed senators in D.C. video of some of the boisterous town-hall meetings and discussed how to respond to disruptions.

"It's a challenge, no question about it, and you've got to get out there and make the case," Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said afterward. "This is not the time for the faint-hearted."

Obama's Civilian Defense Corps, looking back at Waco and Ruby Ridge

    Obama's Civilian Defense Corps

    By Jim Barnes "American Patriot"

Obama's declaration in a campaign speech that the country needed a civilian defense corps that was as well trained, as well equipped, and as strong as the US Army, caused some concern at least in my house.  Why, for what purpose?  Images of Hitler youth, and Brown Shirts in the streets of 30's Germany ran through my head.  This was the top of my concern list.  And where will these civilian defense corps "volunteers" come from. Acorn, Black Panthers, Storm, Apollo Alliance, Symbionese Liberation Army?  This is my second concern.

The two Black Panthers at a polling station in Pennsylvania showed what our life could become. By "racial" profiling the Panthers were intimidating old white voters.  Then the videos on the web of young black men engaging in a symbolic close order drill brought back memories of news reels of the 1930's in Germany.

When the Obama Administration declined to prosecute the Panthers for voter intimidation, it sent a chill up my spine.  If the KKK was at a voting station in South Chicago or Watts, there would be hell to pay.  Armed rebellion, remember the Watts riots, would erupt almost instantly.  The show trial would be covered by all the MSM, especially NBC with glee, "See, we told you there were "Right Wing Extremists."  So intimidation of old white voters is acceptable, and guess who can't carry anything to defend themselves at a polling station.

Glenn Beck's TV show Thursday supplied a possible answer to the question of why the Obama Administration needed a Civilian Defense Corps..  It may not be the only answer, but this one is plausible.  Hussein was upset that his army surrendered so quickly in Gulf War I.  He no longer trusted them.  Losing 900 tanks and vehicles in the final hours of a relatively short and embarrassing war to Hussein, should lead a military commander to look at options.  In response, Hussein established a similar civilian defense corps.

So who does Obama not trust to do his bidding, US Army, BATFE, FBI, Local Law Enforcement.  We have discussed similar issues in these Emails.  e.g. What is the Pentagon's policy on disarming law abiding citizens?  What were the purposes of the US Army or Guard conducting surveillance on a Ron Paul rally at a Federal Reserve Bank, conducting exercises in Iowa, West Virginia and posing as Local Law Enforcement in Alabama?

All military and law enforcement take an oath when sworn in to their new job.  "...Protect the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic."  Orders to disarm law abiding civilians are unlawful orders under the Second Amendment.  Some of the civilians would be former military who never gave back the oath.  Older NCOs and Officers will know an unlawful order when they hear it.  It would be a blue on blue exchange as the old vets would resist, and they know it.  This would be a problem for an Administration wishing to disarm the civilian population?

Would BATFE engage in another exercise like Waco?  Holder has supposedly been told, that there will be no more "free" Wacos or Ruby Ridges.  Does he trust BATFE and the FBI to conduct "unlawful" orders again.  Time will tell.  Local Law Enforcement under the Ninth and Tenth Amendment don't have to enforce Federal Laws that the State feels are an infringement on the State's powers.  Thank God I live in Texas.  Montana and Tennessee are ships on a parallel course.  If you don't live in one of them, move before it is too late.

Enter the Civilian Defense Corps.  They are recruiting on the web as we type and read.  Back to my second concern.  The Wehrmacht supported the old President of Germany in the 1920's and 30's.  The Brown Shirts of the 30's, were organized to oppose Hitler's "enemies."  The Wehrmacht stood by silently.  Already, ACORN has recruited for pay and bussed to Town Hall Meetings supporters with commercially printed signs.  Some opponents may have been attacked in the meetings, although it is hard to tell with the soft MSM coverage of opponents to Obama.

Be afraid, Be very afraid.  Or you can fight.  Attend Tea Parties.  Attend Town Hall Meetings.  Make Phone Calls, Send Emails, Send FAXs, and don't be intimidated.  And if all else falls, keep your powder dry.

First there was the Boston Tea Party, and then there was Lexington Common and the Concord North Bridge.

"WACO" and "Ruby Ridge" are prime examples of what Janet Reno skilfully orchestrated as an important message to anyone and everyone that declares independence from federal intrusion(s). However, what resulted...was a massacre at Waco, allowed by the local sheriff, and outright murder by federal agents at Ruby Ridge, shooting Vickie Weaver in the face, while holding her baby, and their 80 pound son....shot in the back by a sniper. Both agents received a hero's accommodation medals for bravery and service to country. LTC Bo Gritz was there, and he tells the public of what (we) can expect next. http://www.bogritz.com

REAL ID, resurfacing as PASS ID Act (S. 1261)

    PASS ID: REAL ID Reanimated

    News Update by Richard Esguerra

In February, the opponents of REAL ID were given a bit of hope when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that she wanted to repeal the REAL ID Act, the federal government's failed plan to impose a national identification card through state driver's licenses. But what has taken place since is no return to sanity, as political machinations have produced a cosmetic makeover called "PASS ID" that has revived the push for a national identification card.

The PASS ID Act (S. 1261) seeks to make many of the same ineffectual, dangerous changes the REAL ID Act attempted to impose. Fundamentally, PASS ID operates on the same flawed premise of REAL ID -- that requiring various "identity documents" (and storing that information in databases for later access) will magically make state drivers' licenses more legitimate, which will in turn improve national security.

Proponents seem to be blind to the systemic impotence of such an identification card scheme. Individuals originally motivated to obtain and use fake IDs will instead use fake identity documents to procure "real" drivers' licenses. PASS ID creates new risks -- it calls for the scanning and storage of copies of applicants' identity documents (birth certificates, visas, etc.). These documents will be stored in databases that will become leaky honeypots of sensitive personal data, prime targets for malicious identity thieves or otherwise accessible by individuals authorized to obtain documents from the database. Despite some alterations to the scheme, PASS ID is still bad for privacy in many of the same ways the REAL ID was. And proponents of the national ID effort seem blissfully unaware of the creepy implications of a "papers please" mentality that may grow from the issuance of mandatory federal identification cards. Despite token provisions that claim to give states the freedom to issue non-federal identification cards, the card will be mandatory for most -- the PASS ID Act seeks to require everyone to show the federally recognized ID for "any official purpose," including boarding a plane or entering a federal building.

At the moment, health care reform is commanding tremendous attention and effort on the hill, so the PASS ID Act seems to be on the backburner for now. But after the August recess, anything can happen. So stay tuned for more about PASS ID and critical opportunities to flag your opposition to this flawed national ID scheme.

Ted Kennedy's Soviet Gambit revealed, not much of a hero

    Ted Kennedy's Soviet Gambit

Peter Robinson, 08.28.09, 12:01 AM EDT

Considering the late senator's complete record requires digging into the USSR's archives.

Picking his way through the Soviet archives that Boris Yeltsin had just thrown open, in 1991 Tim Sebastian, a reporter for the London Times, came across an arresting memorandum. Composed in 1983 by Victor Chebrikov, the top man at the KGB, the memorandum was addressed to Yuri Andropov, the top man in the entire USSR. The subject: Sen. Edward Kennedy.

"On 9-10 May of this year," the May 14 memorandum explained, "Sen. Edward Kennedy's close friend and trusted confidant [John] Tunney was in Moscow." (Tunney was Kennedy's law school roommate and a former Democratic senator from California.) "The senator charged Tunney to convey the following message, through confidential contacts, to the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Y. Andropov."

Kennedy's message was simple. He proposed an unabashed quid pro quo. Kennedy would lend Andropov a hand in dealing with President Reagan. In return, the Soviet leader would lend the Democratic Party a hand in challenging Reagan in the 1984 presidential election. "The only real potential threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations," the memorandum stated. "These issues, according to the senator, will without a doubt become the most important of the election campaign."

Kennedy made Andropov a couple of specific offers.

First he offered to visit Moscow. "The main purpose of the meeting, according to the senator, would be to arm Soviet officials with explanations regarding problems of nuclear disarmament so they may be better prepared and more convincing during appearances in the USA." Kennedy would help the Soviets deal with Reagan by telling them how to brush up their propaganda.

Then he offered to make it possible for Andropov to sit down for a few interviews on American television. "A direct appeal ... to the American people will, without a doubt, attract a great deal of attention and interest in the country. ... If the proposal is recognized as worthy, then Kennedy and his friends will bring about suitable steps to have representatives of the largest television companies in the USA contact Y.V. Andropov for an invitation to Moscow for the interviews. ... The senator underlined the importance that this initiative should be seen as coming from the American side."

Kennedy would make certain the networks gave Andropov air time--and that they rigged the arrangement to look like honest journalism.

Kennedy's motives? "Like other rational people," the memorandum explained, "[Kennedy] is very troubled by the current state of Soviet-American relations." But that high-minded concern represented only one of Kennedy's motives.

"Tunney remarked that the senator wants to run for president in 1988," the memorandum continued. "Kennedy does not discount that during the 1984 campaign, the Democratic Party may officially turn to him to lead the fight against the Republicans and elect their candidate president."

Kennedy proved eager to deal with Andropov--the leader of the Soviet Union, a former director of the KGB and a principal mover in both the crushing of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the suppression of the 1968 Prague Spring--at least in part to advance his own political prospects.

In 1992, Tim Sebastian published a story about the memorandum in the London Times. Here in the U.S., Sebastian's story received no attention. In his 2006 book, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, historian Paul Kengor reprinted the memorandum in full. "The media," Kengor says, "ignored the revelation."

"The document," Kengor continues, "has stood the test of time. I scrutinized it more carefully than anything I've ever dealt with as a scholar. I showed the document to numerous authorities who deal with Soviet archival material. No one has debunked the memorandum or shown it to be a forgery. Kennedy's office did not deny it."

Why bring all this up now? No evidence exists that Andropov ever acted on the memorandum--within eight months, the Soviet leader would be dead--and now that Kennedy himself has died even many of the former senator's opponents find themselves grieving. Yet precisely because Kennedy represented such a commanding figure--perhaps the most compelling liberal of our day--we need to consider his record in full.

Doing so, it turns out, requires pondering a document in the archives of the politburo.

When President Reagan chose to confront the Soviet Union, calling it the evil empire that it was, Sen. Edward Kennedy chose to offer aid and comfort to General Secretary Andropov. On the Cold War, the greatest issue of his lifetime, Kennedy got it wrong.

Ben Stein: Why Obama is in a hurry to get socialized medicine passed

As President Barack Obama's poll rating head south, Ben Stein explains why in The American Spectator:

Why is President Barack Obama in such a hurry to get his socialized medicine bill passed?

Because he and his cunning circle realize some basic truths:

The American people in their unimaginable kindness and trust voted for a pig in a poke in 2008. They wanted so much to believe Barack Obama was somehow better and different from other ultra-leftists that they simply took him on faith.

They ignored his anti-white writings in his books. They ignored his quiet acceptance of hysterical anti-American diatribes by his minister, Jeremiah Wright.

They ignored his refusal to explain years at a time of his life as a student. They ignored his ultra-left record as a "community organizer," Illinois state legislator, and Senator.

The American people ignored his total zero of an academic record as a student and teacher, his complete lack of scholarship when he was being touted as a scholar.

Now, the American people are starting to wake up to the truth. Barack Obama is a super likeable super leftist, not a fan of this country, way, way too cozy with the terrorist leaders in the Middle East, way beyond naïveté, all the way into active destruction of our interests and our allies and our future.

The American people have already awakened to the truth that the stimulus bill -- a great idea in theory -- was really an immense bribe to Democrat interest groups, and in no way an effort to help all Americans.

Now, Americans are waking up to the truth that ObamaCare basically means that every time you are sick or injured, you will have a clerk from the Department of Motor Vehicles telling your doctor what he can and cannot do.

The American people already know that Mr. Obama's plan to lower health costs while expanding coverage and bureaucracy is a myth, a promise of something that never was and never will be -- a bureaucracy lowering costs in a free society. Either the costs go up or the free society goes away.

Mr. Obama knows Americans are getting wise and will stop him if he delays at all in taking away our freedoms.

    **********

There is his urgency and our opportunity. Once freedom is lost, America is lost. Wake up, beloved America.

Bob van der Valk: Labor Day Weekend Gas Price Advisory

The lull before the storm for gasoline prices

The van der Valk Gas Price Advisory for August 28, 2009

    Dateline:  Issaquah, Washington
    By:  Bob van der Valk
    August 28, 2009 9:00 AM PDT

Right now there is a tropical depression named Terry (after my hometown in Montana) but it is slowly becoming a storm and will then turn into a full fledged hurricane.  Of course, I am referring to what is happening with gasoline pump prices.  The average price of gasoline over the last seven days has not changed precipitously but that is quickly changing on the oil market weather map. The AAA Fuel Gauge report shows the national average price of self-serve regular gas is $2.613 per gallon on Friday, down just over a penny from a week ago.  The national average price of diesel fuel is $2.697 a gallon, up just over a penny.

For much of 2009, crude oil prices have gone steadily upward from the low 30's to the middle 70's.  Meanwhile pump prices have increased nationwide from $1.50 to $2.60 per gallon.  At 42 gallons to a barrel of crude each $10 represents about 25 cents per gallon increase or decrease  for gasoline.   But the market has reacted to the current recession just the opposite of traditional supply and demand dynamics.  Instead of gasoline prices staying steady, they went up while the US and Canadian economies were going through their doldrums.

About 50% of the trades on the Nymex and ICE exchanges represent entities who will not take the delivery of one wet barrel of crude oil or fuel when their contracts expire.  That is down from 55% at the same time last year before the crude oil price bubble burst.  However, it is still higher than the 20% of traders holding paper barrels in 2000.  That year is significant because that is when the CTFC took volume requirement off traders dealing on international exchanges.  Speculators did what speculators do and figured out a way to game the system in order to make money.

The big boys are now investing huge amounts of money on the US dollar as a hedge against inflation as well as flow money into the commodities markets, which has served as the primary driver of oil prices.

Gasoline prices are highest in Hawaii, at $3.297 a gallon, and cheapest in South Carolina, at $2.38 a gallon. California meanwhile has remained stable during the week, averaging $3.046 a gallon. The highest price for gasoline is San Francisco, where the average cost is $3.133 a gallon. The cheapest market is Yuba City, with an average price of $2.948 a gallon.

The Labor Day weekend is just a week away and the spot market prices for gasoline have already firmed up.  That will translate into higher prices at the gas pump at least until the middle of September.  By then the hurricane season for gasoline prices will come to an end when oil companies start switching to refining winter grade gasoline.  The supply of gasoline and diesel will increase by 10%  and pump prices will ease back down to $2 per gallon by Thanksgiving and crude oil to the 40's.

New York is $2.836 a gallon, with the most expensive market in the state the New York City, with an average price of $2.908. New York's most affordable market for motorists this week is Utica-Rome, at $2.769 a gallon.

Beck Attacked By Obama Radical Black Nationalist?

"The liberals like kicking Rush Limbaugh around,
Me they're trying to run out of business!"
    - Glenn Beck

    Obama Special Advisor A Communist!

Obama appointed his friend radical Black Nationalist Van Jones as his "Green Jobs Czar". Jones-who was jailed for helping incite the 1992 Rodney King riots in L.A.-- is now attacking Glenn Beck-who continues to out Jones' dark past. Jones who said he was "a rowdy nationalist" prior to his arrest, emerged from prison and said he had become "a communist." The White House apparently approves and has not raised any challenges or denials saying only that "Jones is not a Czar. He is a special adviser to the president!"

Now Glenn Beck is being attacked by Color of Change--a radical Black Nationalist group co-founded by Van Jones--in retaliation for Beck outing Van Jones' questionable past. Beck aired a segment on Jones on July 28 where he called the activist a "self-professed communist" and questioned the role he was playing in the administration.

Jones founded Color of Change after Hurricane Katrina, calling President Bush a "racist" for his response. Rapper Kanye West made a statement that Bush "hated Black people" and "ordered troops to go down and shoot" Blacks in New Orleans. Jones' group immediately starting selling t-shirt on their website which read "Kanye was right". Now this same group is trying to shut down Conservative Glenn Beck for exposing the Obama agenda, once again playing the race card.

Color of Change announced that it has secured commitments from 36 companies including Wal-Mart and Sprint not to advertize on Becks show. Laughably, some of the companies never had a presence on Glenn Beck.

DefendGlenn.com has gotten conflicting responses from these advertisers, so we do not know how much they are blowing smoke for the radicals over at Color of Change out of fear of Van Jones, Obama BFF and self-described "black nationalist" and "Communist" who somehow got appointed as "Green Jobs Czar".

Jones a civil rights lawyer is also the founder of California's Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, "a non-profit agency for justice, opportunities and peace."

The Ella Baker Center was connected to STORM (Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement), a "multi-racial activist collective with Marxist influences" with which Jones was involved.

In 1992, Van Jones founded another STORM project, Bay Area Police Watch, a "hotline and lawyer-referral service for victims and survivors of police abuse." This is fitting, perhaps, since Jones was himself arrested and detained briefly during a protest after the Rodney King verdict that same year.

This is what I need to be a part of really radical: communists and anarchists

Jones told the East Bay Express in 2005: "I met all these young radical people of color - I mean really radical: communists and anarchists. And it was, like,' I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary."

Obama like anyone is to be understood by the friends and staff he gets advice from. Obama has transformed his friend Jones from radical activist to Establishment insider. Only an amateur left-wing administration would put a self-described communist in charge of creating jobs.

Norman Thomas, six time Socialist candidate for POTUS, said, "The American people will ... under the name of liberalism... adopt every fragment of the socialist program, The Democratic Party has adopted our socialist platform."

Representatives of Procter & Gamble and AT&T - listed by Color of Change as companies that had signed onto the boycott - told The Times that their companies did not run spots on Beck's program to begin with."

Fox News spokesman said the boycott has not impacted the network's revenues or Beck's audience,

The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network so there has been no revenue lost.

The uproar started after Prof. Gates and President Obama made fools of themselves over a policeman doing his job. Beck on an appearance on the morning show, "Fox & Friends," simply stated what most conservatives now believe. Beck made and observation about Obama, based on the Gates issue, of having "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

"This guy is, I believe, a racist," Beck added.

The uproar that followed did not dampen Beck's viewership. This month, his show has averaged 2.25 million viewers, and his ratings are up from July, when Beck's program averaged 2.05 million viewers. Supporter's and believer's websites have called for viewers to fight back against the advertising boycott. Many media veterans have denounced Van Jones' tactic as a suppression of free speech.

Pandemic (Review) by Forbes, and what H1N1 has become, or not become...

    NTM Staff Note:

The Forbes article (below) from June 2009 is relevant today, since the panic was initiated over two deaths in the U.S., while offending Mexico as the originator of the Swine Flu, continued by an unnecessary drop in pork sales. Alternative news sources blew the "pandemic" out-of-the-water with aggressive news and statistical reports. The public eased back, but not for very long, when the W.H.O. announced that the H1N1 bird/pig/human combination virus would come back in October to REALLY kill us if we didn't oblige to the vaccinations, of which are being hurried in a frenzy attempt to further scare the world into compliance.

This is clearly a case of "damn if we do and damn if we don't." Getting ALL the information out there and available will come to a cease, if Obama initiates his emergency powers to shut-down the internet, leaving the alphabet TV networks to rely upon, and that will (only) add to the apprehension by the American people that a pandemic is as bad as they say it will be, or not as bad. Basically, a "damn if they do and damn if they don't" scenario. Informed and educated people need to decide for themselves, instead of (for them) by a government with questionable ties to the pharma companies, and the likely results of what mandatory vaccinations will create in America, if not...around the world.

    What The H1N1 Pandemic Means

Rebecca Ruiz, 06.11.09, 01:15 PM EDT

The swine flu is now an official pandemic, but that doesn't mean you should panic.

    image

After six weeks of closely watching the spread of H1N1 swine influenza across the globe, the World Health Organization (WHO) today declared the outbreak an official pandemic, raising the threat alert from 5 to 6, its highest level.

Officials were careful to note, however, that the announcement reflected the flu's reach, not its severity. As of Thursday afternoon, the organization had tallied 28,774 cases and 144 deaths in 74 countries. Margaret Chan, the WHO's director general, called an emergency meeting when officials noticed a sudden rise in cases around the world, particularly in Australia.

"At this early stage, the pandemic can be characterized globally as being moderate in severity," the WHO said in the statement, urging nations not to close borders or restrict travel and trade. We "remain in close dialogue with influenza vaccine manufacturers," it said.

Several public health experts said the announcement was expected and shouldn't trigger alarm.

"They're just confirming what we already know," says Dr. Martin Blaser, an infectious-disease expert at New York University's Langone Medical Center. "It is a pandemic; it has been spreading all over the world." Dr. Blaser added that the number of fatalities has been lower than what officials see in the course of a normal flu season, which typically reaches 250,000 to 500,000 cases worldwide.

"I don't see it as being greatly consequential to the world's health," says Dr. Philip Alcabes, an infectious-disease expert at Hunter College in New York. He is also the author of Dread: How Fear and Fantasy Have Fueled Epidemics from the Black Death to Avian Flu.

Dr. Alcabes applauded the WHO's cautious approach to declaring a pandemic, despite criticism that the organization hadn't acted quickly enough. Still, he argues the current six-point threat scale is too "blunt an instrument for a complex disease outbreak."

Declaring a pandemic heightens awareness among public-health officials and tends to increase government funding and response. The U.S. government has already taken steps like increasing the availability of flu-fighting medicines and authorizing $1 billion for the development of a new vaccine against the novel virus.

But a more forward-looking strategy, Alcabes says, one that focuses on how outbreaks occur and how public-health officials can stop them, would be more effective than such an alarm system.

For those worried that the pandemic announcement has implications for average people, Dr. Blaser urges them not to worry--or to take greater precautions with travel and public exposure.

"There's no hidden meaning," Blaser says. "For public-health authorities, they'll just watch this carefully and take appropriate actions."

H1N1 China Pharma Sinovac Vaccines Ready, Americans Waiting With Open Arms

Sinovac Reports Top-Line Preliminary Results of H1N1 Vaccine Clinical Trials

    - Results Show Good Safety Profile and Immunogenicity -

BEIJING, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (NYSE Amex: SVA), a leading provider of vaccines in China, announced today positive top-line results from the completed clinical trial for its internally-developed H1N1 vaccine. The clinical data unblinding conference was held in Beijing on the afternoon of August 17, 2009. Notably, Sinovac is the first company worldwide to complete clinical trials for the H1N1 vaccine.

The analysis of the clinical trial results showed that the H1N1 vaccine developed by Sinovac induces good immunogenicity after one dose. The seropositive rate, seroconvertive rate and GMT increasing multiple have reached the international criteria for vaccines, which indicates that Sinovac's H1N1 vaccine has good immunogenicity and offers protection.

After receiving one shot of the vaccine, none of the volunteers participating in Sinovac's clinical trials exhibited any signs of severe adverse reactions. The adverse events were all mild and transient, with pain at the site of injection as the most common symptom. The total adverse event rate is similar to the seasonal influenza vaccine. These results demonstrated that the H1N1 vaccine has a good safety profile.

Mr. Weidong Yin, Chairman, President and CEO of Sinovac, commented, "As demonstrated in the clinical trial of our H1N1 vaccine, we can confirm the immunization schedule and dosage, which can provide the scientific reference to the state government to establish the inoculation strategy of H1N1 vaccine. Sinovac plans to complete the summary report as soon as possible and fully evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the H1N1 vaccine. Thereafter, we intend to apply for the Production License for H1N1 vaccine in compliance with SFDA's regulations."

The clinical trials were initiated in the Huai Rou district, Beijing City on July 22, 2009, with the design of single center, randomization and double blindness. The inoculation was completed on August 15, 2009. A total of 1,614 participants over 3 years old received the H1N1 vaccine. Blood samples were collected from the participants on the vaccination date, 14 days post vaccination date and 21 days post vaccination date. The National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products (NICBPB), the central laboratory of China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), have completed the HI antibody tests on all blood samples.

This clinical trial was organized by China's Center for Disease Control (CDC), and undertaken by the Beijing CDC. The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the SFDA are continuing to closely monitor this clinical trial. Deputy Director General of MOH Disease Control Department Donglou Xiao, Director of SFDA Registration Section Wei Zhang, and other relevant experts visited the clinical site to inspect the clinical study.

Bill Would Give President Emergency Control of Internet

    August 28th, 2009

    Via: Cnet:

Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.

They’re not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency.

The new version would allow the president to “declare a cybersecurity emergency” relating to “non-governmental” computer networks and do what’s necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for “cybersecurity professionals,” and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.

“I think the redraft, while improved, remains troubling due to its vagueness,” said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which counts representatives of Verizon, Verisign, Nortel, and Carnegie Mellon University on its board. “It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill.”
